課程目標

The purpose of Thesis English is to increase students’ abilities to express themselves as they write academic work in English.  The course will especially emphasize improvement in vocabulary, grammar and organization of ideas in written English.  The course also hopes to help students improve in their speaking of English.

課程綱要

Students will be expected to read brief articles in English(which will also be discussed in class), and to respond to the articles by writing short papers(2-3pages each as a minimum) in which they practice the skill of analysis, summary, paraphrase and quotation.

The professor will also request that students keep a weekly intellectual diary in English, call “a journal.” The journal should be written by hand, with sufficient space between the lines so the instructor can use the space for corrections and comments.  The length of the journal will be a minimum of 4 notebook size pages, with writing on both sides of the page, the writing on alternating lines.  The journal will be part of the weekly homework assignment, and will give students the opportunity to practice their writing by reflecting on daily or personal life events.

All written homework must be revised and rewritten after it is returned by the instructor.

授課方式

The methods of the class will be lecture-demonstration, discussion, and personal coaching of students in their writing.

Material will be handed out in the class itself.

成績評量

Grades will be computed on the basis of progress in the writing of English, class participation (including discussion), and fidelity to the homework.

The course offers no exams.
