COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the Government and Binding framework of Chomsky (1981) with some discussion of the recent development in the Minimalist Program (1995). The focus will be on the analysis of English. Therefore, the examples used in this course will be primarily taken from English and occasionally from Mandarin Chinese and other languages.

GOAL: The goal of this course is to familiarize students with Chomsky¡¦s formal approach to grammar, which prepares them to read relevant literature themselves in the future, and to be able to evaluate it independently.
