課程目標

 

This course aims to provide a broad introduction to children’s language development and to familiarize the most widely used tools for child language research, the Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES).  Themes running through the course include (1) levels of language development (precursors to speech, one word stage, word-combination, syntax, and  connected discourse), individual differences, acquisition of Mandarin Chinese, second language acquisition, etc. (2) theories and research of language acquisition, and (3) methodology on child language research.  Students are expected to familiarize how children talk at various ages, factors and processes influencing language acquisition, and how to analyze language data using the CHILDES. Besides lectures and discussion sections, this course will offer computer laboratory to help students master two of the major tools of the CHILDES, the CHAT transcription system and the CLAN analysis programs.
