王士元

Wang, William Shi-Yuan

簡介

王士元生於上海，1951年畢業於紐約哥倫比亞大學，大學畢業後接著到美國密西根大學專攻語言學，並於1959年完成他的博士論文。王教授在他的博士論文裡結合了語言學和聲響學的知識並且運用它去解釋機器的語言認知問題。他這方面的研究發表在Journal of the Acoustical Society of America這本期刊裡。

王教授畢業後在IBM研究中心裡作有關俄語翻英語的機器翻譯方面的研究，後來更在麻省理工學院研究語言分析的工作。之後他回到他的母校密西根大學交了一年書，一年後他轉到俄亥俄州立大學，並且在那裡成立語言學系和東亞語言學系並且擔任這兩系的系主任。

之後王教授獲得台灣大學中文系和人類學系所頒發的榮譽教授頭銜，並且於1966年到加州柏克萊大學擔任教授一職到1994年退休為止。在他擔任柏克萊教授的期間(1973)創辦了在語言學領域最主要的一個國際性的出版物：Journal of Chinese Linguistics。王教授退休後仍繼續擔任伯克萊的教授、趙元任中心的理事、及中文語言學期刊的編輯。
