一、生平簡介：王士元生於上海，大學畢業於紐約的哥倫亞大學，後來在密西根大學專攻語言學，並在1959年完成他的博士論文，此博士論文結合語言學和聲響學的知識去解釋語言的機器認知問題，他在這方面的研究被發表在此期刊中：Journal
of the Acoustical Society of America。此後，他在I.B.M.研究中心研究俄語翻英語的機器翻譯，後來更在麻省理工學院研究語言分析的工作，之後回到密西根大學交了一年書再到俄亥俄州立大學，在那裡他成立了語言學系和東亞語言學系並且也是這兩系的所長。
在接受由台灣大學中文系和人類學系所發起的榮譽教授頭銜後，王先生1966年接受了位於加州的柏克萊大學的教授一職，並且一直做到1994年退休。1973年他在伯克萊創立了在語言學領域最主要的一個國際性的出版物：Journal
of Chinese Linguistics。在退休後，他仍繼續在伯克萊的研究所當教授一職、趙元任中心的理事、及中文語言學期刊的編輯。
他所接受過的榮譽頭銜包括以下：

National Professorship from Sweden（Stockholm，Umea，Upsala，and Lund）；

王士元在電機系、中文系、翻譯系、和語言學系任教授一職，並且是Language
Information Sciences Research Center中的一員，現於香港城市大學任職，他發表的文章出現在科技的期刊、百科全書、和在一般科學雜誌。
